mid-week Connect: 1/31/24 ~ Wellness across cultures

Greetings and Happy Midweek!

Since my last few weeks have been focused on my own personal wellness [*], I thought we would explore a few aspects of how wellness is perceived, pursued and processed across cultures. This broad topic can fit into pretty much every dimension of our Global SKILLs 3D Dynamics Perspectives and every component of our PROACTive Framework. But this week let’s stick with the Harbor, or 3rd, Dimension of 3D Dynamics. Within and across cultures, this Harbor dimension is a safe space where people meet and work together toward mutually agreed upon and mutually beneficial goals…and that’s what personal wellness is all about, right?!

One major choice I have dealt with through my own quest for wellness recently is what approaches I will follow - based on scientific research, holistic, traditional western medical, innovative or experimental, etc etc. My privilege in this situation is that I am blessed with many options. My strategy, which basically is how I live my life - within and across cultures anyway, is to explore all options, seek lots of input (professional and experiential) and do the best I can making the most informed choices. Which leads me to a nice mix of approaches, and hopefully great results!

A favorite example of this from Jola culture is the time our friend in the village, the traditional healer, came by our home to ask for some aspirin. I was a bit surprised at his request and asked him about using this type of modern medicine. He responded with a big smile, “My medicine helps me and our people with lots of things, but aspirin does wonders when I get a headache!”

In this journey, a major need I have for my own wellness is to draw support from my diverse communities as we work together, collaboratively - keeping the dynamics in the safe Harbor space. So I have set up a support network which is giving me daily input - family and friends, near and far, as well as my medical team and my work team. Like my friend the traditional healer, I am happy to draw from any and all resources!

As each of us maintains our wellness through the trials and triumphs we and our communities face, let’s keep the value of Harbor moments in focus…we’ll each and all be the better for doing that!

How about you ~ what’s one wellness need you have right now that time ‘in the Harbor’ might help?

Share about that with a friend or note it here.

And check out the Global SKILLs LINKs below for more on wellness…and harbors!

Thanks for being part of this Connect community.

Until next week,

~ One huge help I have had these past 2 weeks has been through asking several family members and friends to research online for me, using key terms I have provided for them based on my needs - about my condition, the many ways to treat it, pre and post op resources, personal stories, etc. I highly recommend this ‘harbor’ dynamic for when you face similar challenges!

~ there are many ways the image of a harbor can be applied cross-culturally…have fun with this link and ask yourself, “How could each of these inform my own ‘harbor’ dynamics?”

[*] As I shared last week, I have been having some health issues. My main focus right now is the need for back surgery which has been scheduled for this coming Monday, Feb 5th. Happily it is the most minimally invasive type of spine surgery, and the prognosis is excellent. Also, I ‘happen’ to live in a mecca of medical providers and services, so everything is within an easy few miles of my home. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes and thanks already to those of you who have reached out to help and support me through this.
