mid-week Connect: 1/26/22 ~ Culturally Art-full

Once in awhile, I click on the ‘Google Doodle” image which greets us all multiple times a day when we are working online (click on google to see the image and here’s the story https://culture.pl/en/artist/katarzyna-kobro) . Today’s doodle, about an early 20th century avant-garde Polish-Russian artist, intrigued me - and Katarzyna’s story inspires this brief reflection on facets of what it means to be ‘culturally art-full’! In our Global SKILLs training, one of our PROACTive strategies is “collaboration” - so let’s linger together on this for the next few minutes and see where it leads us!

Although avant-garde and/or abstract art are not my personal favorites, I was struck by the beauty of Katarzyna’s sculptures in particular. I wonder at how they must reflect the vibrant mix of cultures and turbulent times during which she lived and made her art. I make a connection too with my own parents, who were her contemporaries but in very different cultural contexts (which are my roots) in another part of the world. And then, reading the details of her own bi-cultural roots and her personal triumphs and challenges which so deeply impacted her art, I was intrigued to read the different ways in which her work has impacted people across cultures to this day - including me!

Art and Culture, and how they interact and impact, can be experienced in so many different ways. And I think, even as it’s refreshing to step outside one’s preferred artistic milieu and experience something new…it’s also refreshing to be reminded of how culture is always in some way integrated in art - and vice versa!

How about you ~ what cultural or artistic responses do Katarzyna’s art evoke for you?

Share about that with a friend or note it here.

And check out the Global SKILLs LINKs below for a few other evocative art & culture resources!

Thanks for being part of this Connect community.

Until next week,

Betsy

Photos of her new home rekindle fond memories of my own experiences in Tunisia, & my appreciation of North African Islamic art & culture - which are richly imbedded in Andalusian history, art & culture. How about ALL this for multi-cultural considerations! https://www.metmuseum.org/art/metpublications/Al_Andalus_The_Art_of_Islamic_Spain
