Global SKILLs midweek Connect: 12/20/23 ~ Generosity across cultures

Greetings and Happy Midweek!

As this Holiday Season is being celebrated in many ways around the world, I thought we could explore the topic of generosity this week. [*] This fits into the Collaborations component, among others, in our Global SKILLs PROACTive Framework since acts of generosity always involve at least 2 parties interacting, initiated by one with the other on the receiving end. {**]

Generosity comes in all shapes and sizes around the world and across cultures. It often occurs woven with other virtues like kindness, hospitality and philanthropy. I personally think the best version of it is when, although one participant or group is on the giving end as the initiator, all who are involved end up receiving something. To say this another way, each gives something to the other and everyone benefits. That’s also true collaboration!

For example, one time my parents visited us while we lived in the village in Senegal. The village people really went beyond themselves to generously welcome them. They bought gifts of eggs and peanut butter - both highly valued food items and often in short supply, but generously offered to guests. My folks felt humbled and honored to receive these gifts - and our village family and friends were delighted to offer them something they valued, and have it received with such obvious deep appreciation. Everyone was so happy the villagers began singing and dancing, with my folks clapping along…a wonderfully spontaneous celebration of generosity!

As we move between cultures this season and through the coming New Year, let’s always be on the lookout for ways we can be generous - which might come to us sometimes just by observing how others’ practice this virtue!

How about you ~ what is a new way you have experienced or practiced generosity recently?

Share about that with a friend or note it here.

Until next week,
