Connect mid-month RAP: 10/18/23 ~ Reunions across cultures

Greetings and Happy Midweek!

And since today is just past mid-month, it’s time for another of our RAP sessions (Review And Process, deeper and wider). Each RAP revisits a cross-cultural theme or topic from a previous Connect. This month we are going to revisit the topic of reunions and focus on how people ‘reunite’ across cultures. [*] This fits into the Transformations component of our Global SKILLs PROACTive Framework because, when people do ‘reunite’, the result is often transformative!

For the past 3 years, I have been enjoying an extended reunion with a dozen or so women from my early school days in New Jersey. After many years of very little to no contact between most of us, we reconnected one by one during that first summer of covid and have been meeting virtually every other week since then with email updates during the summer. What I have so very much enjoyed through this group is seeing how we’ve been transformed from a group of school girls with shared relatively mono-cultural beginnings into a group of women branching out into as many diverse cultural contexts as there are of us in the group. And now, all these years later, the transformation conintues, as we’ve come back together into a increasingly tightly woven group of friends!

In this spirit of bringing our different adult years cultural backgrounds together and getting to know and appreciate each other in these contexts, while celebrating our shared roots, it’s been one big on-going reunion! We’ve gone way beyond getting reacquainted by forming new and deeper bonds through sharing memories and expereinces, and exploring new ways we can get together and bring others together. Along with our zoom gatherings, we’ve had several fun small group in-person reunions. And 2 weeks ago, a few of us in this group hosted a 50th reunion welcoming many members of our high school class - and a great time was had by all!

This pretty amazing dynamic leads me to several cross-cultral insights for anyone interested in trying to ‘reunite’ with any group from their past. First of all, it’s totally worth it and, in these times of globally available communications, it dosen’t take a whole lot of effort! Even as we do expereince deep and wide divisions from time to time at all levels, having shared roots and venturing forth to reconnect and explore new pathways forward is deeply rewarding and contributes, I believe, to transformative global community building - starting at grass roots levels!

How about you ~ what is one transformative reunion expereince you’d had…or would like to try to create?

Share about that with a friend or note it here.

And check out the Global SKILLs LINKs below for more on reunions around the globe.

Thanks for being part of this Connect community.

Until next week,
